My Natural Sciences Glossary
My Natural Sciences Glossary
20 Natural Sciences terms
Hi, my name is Nathaniel Bourlard and I live in Two-Mountains. I have been studying Natural Sciences for 2 and a half years at Lionel-Groulx College. My field of study is composed of chemistry, physics, and biology. The glossary that I made could be useful for every new student in Natural Sciences or for students that started in September 2020. Each word in the following glossary is related to my field of study. I will include only basic words and words that will be used regularly. By learning the meanings of these words, you will have an easier time with the specific courses of this field of study.
- acceleration
- increase in the rate or speed of something.
- analysis
- Detailed examination of the elements or structure of something.
- bacteria
- A member of a large group of unicellular microorganisms which have cell walls but lack organelles and an organized nucleus, including some that can cause disease.
- biology
- The study of living organisms, divided into many specialized fields that cover their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution.
- body
- The physical structure of a person or an animal, including the bones, flesh, and organs.
- charge
- The property of matter that is responsible for electrical phenomena, existing in a positive or negative form.
- chemistry
- The branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change; and the use of these processes to form new substances.
- distance
- An amount of space between two things or people.
- electricity
- A form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles (such as electrons or protons), either statically as an accumulation of charge or dynamically as a current.
- element
- A component or constituent of a whole or one of the parts into which a whole may be resolved by analysis.
- energy
- The capacity for vigorous activity; available power.
- experiment
- A scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact
- hypothesis
- A supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
- laboratory
- A room or building equipped for scientific experiments, research, or teaching, or for the manufacture of drugs or chemicals.
- movement
- An act of changing physical location or position or of having this changed.
- physics
- The branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. The subject matter of physics, distinguished from that of chemistry and biology, includes mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sound, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms.
- reaction
- An action performed or a feeling experienced in response to a situation or event.
- speed
- Relative rapidity in moving, going, etc.
- structure
- The arrangement of and relations between the parts or elements of something complex.
- virus
- An infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host.
